Photosynthesis

6 CO2 + 6 H2O + Energy —> C6H12O6 + 6 O2

Basics
Photosynthesis refers to the biochemical reaction by which plants use energy (from sunlight) to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and a waste product (oxygen).

The “secret sauce” in photosynthesis is chlorophyll, a substance that gives plants their green color and harnesses the energy from sunlight.

The glucose produced by photosynthesis is the food by which plants live and grow and is also stored for later use in a more complex forms known as carbohydrates.

The purpose of photosynthesis is to provide food (glucose) for a plant to live.

It seems strange to think of oxygen as a waste product, but the oxygen “thrown off” by plants by photosynthesis provides the oxygen that sustains animal life (through cellular respiration) and Earth’s atmosphere.
