Cellular Respiration

C6H12O6 + 6 O2 —> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + Energy

Glucose + 6 Oxygens  —> 6 Carbon Dioxides + 6 Waters + Energy

Basics
Breathing refers to the bodily process by which animals inhale and exhale.

Respiration refers to the physiological process by which animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.

Cellular Respiration refers to the biochemical reaction in which glucose (from food) is broken down in the presence of oxygen to release Energy and waste products (carbon dioxide and water) inside an individual cell.

Energy produced during cellular respiration is known as ATP.

ATP from “zillions” of individual cells provides Energy for the entire body.

The purpose of cellular respiration is to release Energy (ATP) that enables an animal to live.

While it does not seem strange to think of carbon dioxide as a waste product, it does seem strange to think of water as a waste product.  However, both the water and carbon dioxide “thrown off” by cellular respiration are indeed waste products.  Fortunately, the excess carbon dioxide sustains plant life (through photosynthesis).

  1. How is H2O the waste product on number 2? There are 12 Hydrogens on both sides?

  2. Hi, Jen

I believe you are referring to Question 3.

Because the purpose of cellular respiration is to release “useful” Energy (also known as ATP) that enables an animal to live, water and carbon dioxide are considered to be waste products of the biochemical reaction.

Thank you for following this site. I hope that it is helpful for you and your students.
